Superbook is an accessory that will turn your smartphone into a laptop

A Kickstarter campaign has been started for a laptop shell that actually uses your smartphone to operate. Basically, your phone becomes your computer, simply by plugging it into the device, called the Superbook. It will enable users to leverage the performance of their handset to do things like browse the Internet, edit documents and create presentations with Microsoft Office applications, play games, write code, and do much more on an 11.6 inch screen which is significantly bigger than that of a smartphone. The goal of the Superbook Kickstarter campaign was to raise $50,000. It has smashed that and raised nearly $1.3 million with 18 days still to go.

The Superbook is basically a laptop dock that turns any Android smartphone into a laptop computer. It looks exactly like a laptop, but instead of having all of its components inside the shell, it uses your phone’s components. This seriously cuts down on costs. The Superbook itself offers eight hours of battery life, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard and a multitouch trackpad. The device weighs just 2 pounds, so it’s a very portable option indeed.

The base Superbook features a LCD screen with 768p display resolution, the 1080p display can be availed for $30 more. The dock also features USB-Type C port and Android specific navigation keys. At the heart of Superbook is Andromium that turns data from your phone into data that can be more easily interfaced with on a computer screen. The Andromium application simulates a familiar desktop operating system and is said to offer a mouse cursor, desktop shortcuts, easy file management and desktop-class browsing.

Superbook is our attempt at turning smartphones into laptop solutions. Basically, in the history of computing, there have been many attempts to allow you to use your cellphone as a laptop,” says Andrew Jiang, Co-founder of Andromium.

You know, dumb hardware shells, laptop shells, but all the processing happens on your phone. The idea is that since cell phones are getting more and more powerful, they’re cheaper than everything, and everyone has one, so why not run everything on it? All the information on applications is already on your phone, so why not keep a shell in the office and a shell at home, and instead of lugging around your laptop, just plug your phone in?”

Once you plug in your smartphone, the Superbook will basically be an extension of your phone with a desktop-type interface. All of the files on the smartphone will be accessible, and the computer will use your phone’s Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connection to connect to the Internet and other peripherals. Any smartphone running Android 5.0 or newer with at least a dual core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a USB Type-C or Micro-USB port and around 100MB of free space can be used with Superbook. The most attractive feature of Superbook is its price. For less than $100 you can have a low cost laptop computer solution to meet all your multimedia, work and entertainment purposes, at home or anywhere else.
