Samsung mocks Apple for removing the headphone jack

Samsung, the South Korea based giant unveiled its latest smartphone, the Galaxy Note 7, with a 5.7-inch display at a launch event in New York City. Unlike the iPhone, the Note 7 features an AMOLED display, wireless charging, expandable memory, a pen-like stylus, USB Type-C connector and IP68 water resistance rating. The largest iPhone has a 5.5-inch LCD screen. Apple reportedly is removing the headphone jack on its upcoming iPhone 7 to make the device slimmer. That will force people who want to use headsets with the phone to use a Bluetooth wireless headset or a special one that connects to the iPhone’s multifunction Lightning port.

Justin Denison, Samsung’s Vice President of Marketing while discussing the new Galaxy Note 7 smartphone pointed out the presence of the traditional 3.5mm headphone jack on the device. While listing the various features of the smartphone, he paused and said rhetorically, “Do you know what else it comes with? An audio jack. I’m just saying.”

Although Denison didn’t mention Apple on stage, it is quite clear his headphone jack comments were directed at the Cupertino based company and its plans to eliminate the 3.5mm headphone jack in future iPhones. He also mentioned the 3,500 mAh battery and the expandable storage capability, some features that are not to be found on the upcoming iPhone 7. The Samsung Galaxy Note 7 takes security a step further than the iPhone by adding an iris-scanning camera to unlock the phone. It works as an alternative to fingerprint scanning, which doesn’t work well in some situations, such as when fingers are wet or dirty. With the iris scanner, you just have to look at the front of the phone and it will recognize you by your eye pattern. The smartphone is also loaded with more processing power with 4GB of RAM, which is 25% more than the iPhone 7.

It’s not yet entirely clear why Apple has decided to remove the headphone jack, but its elimination may result in extra space that can be used for other components and it may also contribute to improved waterproofing. Apple’s upcoming iPhones are rumored to be water resistant than the iPhone 6 series and may even feature a 3D-Touch Home button which will be totally flush with the design of the smartphone and it’s touchscreen.

The upcoming Apple iPhone 7 is expected to be launched sometime in September this year. Samsung launched its 7th generation Galaxy Note smartphone a little more than a month before Apple’s iPhone 7 launch event. The South Korean giant said that the Galaxy Note 7 will be available on August 19. The device will run on Google Android 6.0.1 operating system, known as Android Marshmallow.
